Amateur Astronomy Publications in Greece

There exist a number of publications of potential interest to the amateur astronomer in the form of magazines, newspaper supplements and special-issue CD's and DVD's. The listing below is an enumeration of the author's attempts to document the complete gamut of materials available to the interested reader and amateur astronomer.

Item Publication Comments
1
Ουρανος
Without doubt the most recognized magazine for the amateur which is produced on a quarterly basis by the society in Volos at least since the early 1990's. An annual subscription is a mere 7.50 euros and each issue includes articles on the forthcoming quarter in relation to astronomical phenomena of interest, a constellation of interest, book reviews etc.
2
Γεωτροπιο
Another excellent publication which is included for free each week in the Saturday edition of the widely-circulated newspaper ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΟΤΥΠΙΑ. Each week's edition will contain an article relating to space astronomy and science (satellite missions etc) by Prof. Ioannis Daglis (National Observatory of Athens) or current events (meteors, comets, constellations etc) by Dr. Dionysis Simopoulos (Eygenidio Planetarium, Athens). Also, a photo gallery section at the back of the magazine always includes one photo related to the cosmos (ex. the Hubble Space Telescope, planetary rovers etc) with a brief write-up by a local astronomer. The cost of the Saturday newspaper is only 1.50 euro.
3
Popular Science
This well-known international publication is also available in a Greek edition and is included for free each month in the Saturday edition of the widely-circulated newspaper ΚΑΘΗΜΕΡΙΝΗ. Each edition will contain at least one article written by a local astronomer/professor so as to add some local "flavour" to this otherwise international magazine. Although the magazine is also available at newstands, its acquisition is much cheaper via the purchase of the Saturday paper (2 euro).
4
Science Illustrated
This publication has a wide circulation in the Scandinavian countries and includes a readership in excess of 30% for some demographic segments. Its first appearance in Greece was with the April/2005 issue and consistently contains a variety of articles and brief notes related to astronomy and cosmology. Also of interest is the monthly column related to key phenomenon and events (4.90 euro per issue and which includes a DVD video or 3.90 euro without the accompanying DVD).
5
Science & Discovery
The latest science magazine to appear in circulation in Greece with a very strong presence of astronomy and related articles. Published by one of the largest print media establishments in Greece (Dimosiografikos Organismos Lambraki), this new monthly publication first appeared with the May/2005 issue and should quickly become a welcome addition to the available pool of the popular science-related magazines in Greece (3.90 euro per issue).
6
BHMA Science
This magazine is included with the widely-circulated newspaper ΤΟ ΒΗΜΑ once a month (usually the second Sunday of the month) and contains articles related to astronomy on an ad-hoc basis. The magazine is not available for purchase otherwise (2.50 euro for the Sunday paper).
7
Γαιοραμα
This magazine is included with the widely-circulated newspaper ΤΟ ΒΗΜΑ once a month (Sunday edition) and contains articles related to astronomy on a truly ad-hoc basis. The magazine is also available for purchase directly but costs less with the purchase of the Sunday paper (2.50 euro).
8
Περισκοπιο
Another publication which is dedicated to science and which consistently includes material related to various aspects of astronomy, cosmology and various astronomical phenomenon. Unfortunately this publication is only available at newstands or by subscription (5 euro per issue).
9
Αστροσκαν
A very recent offering with only three quarterly issues so far but a worthwhile effort nonetheless dedicated to the solar system and the various phenomenon to occur during the forthcoming quarter. Each issue also includes lots of ephemeridial information. Subscription is 16 euros annually.
10
Ερευνητες
This pull-out section is also included for free in the Saturday edition of the widely-circulated newspaper ΚΑΘΗΜΕΡΙΝΗ. Articles are quite often geared to younger individuals but cover a wide spectrum of topics related to astronomy. Invariably the articles are the work of Dr. Dionysis Simopoulos (Eygenidio Planetarium, Athens) covering at least two large pages in the pull-out section. Unfortunately I have not been able to identify a consistent publication pattern and would risk to label the appearance of these articles "ad hoc" and "sporadic". The cost of the Saturday newspaper ranges between 1.50 and 3 euros depending on the presence or absence of other offers being included as a bundle on any given Saturday with the newspaper.
11
Επιστημη
Another newspaper contribution which appears on a weekly basis in the Sunday edition of the widely-circulated "ΕΘΝΟΣ ΤΗΣ ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗΣ" and authored by Dr. Dionysis Simopoulos (Eygenidio Planetarium, Athens) covering a very broad spectrum of topics in the form of a column near the back of the paper labelled "Επιστημη" with a sub-title identifying the week's subject. The cost of this Sunday newspaper is 2.50 euro.
12
CD / DVD
Two of the most widely-circulated newspapers in Greece, ΚΑΘΗΜΕΡΙΝΗ and ΤΟ ΒΗΜΑ, provide on an ad hoc basis very interesting CD's and DVD's with the Sunday editions. Quite often these works are from National Geographic (!) and The BBC and cover a very wide but most interesting range of topics related to astronomy, the cosmos, space flight etc. Regrettably these special-issue supplements are sporadic but certainly worthwhile! Another widely-circulated national newspaper described above (ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΟΤΥΠΙΑ) includes a CD every week with the Saturday edition, invariably productions from the Discovery Channel, with fortunately a high proportion being astronomy-related.
