Astrophotography by Anthony Ayiomamitis

Lunar Image Gallery

This photo gallery documents an on-going project to image EVERY single feature of the lunar surface visible from earth (1,882 distinct features) and which have been broken down by morphological category such as mare (sea), mons (mountain) or montes (mountain range or group of mountains), crater etc. Most of the images have been taken near the terminator where possible so as to attenuate the brightness of the moon and help facilitate in bringing forth more salient features. All features are identified using the naming convention adopted by the International Astronomical Union which means a very small number of craters, for example, will be named slightly different than what you may have expected as a result of some recent changes. Aside from the sample images below for each morphological category, clicking on the morphological category label on the leftmost column will lead the interested visitor to a complete set of images for that category.
